Cancer Prevention
In the year 1900, the chances of getting cancer was about one in twenty. Now it is about one in four. We live in the most polluted environment in history and everything around us could effect our health and well being. Not counting lung cancer, cancer rates in women are higher than men, yet women usually take better care of themselves than men. The Difference could be due to cosmetic ingredients used by women.
Free-Radicals Cause Cancer
Free-radicals are created in airborne emissions, fuel burning, sunlight, chlorinating, many chemical sources and in our body’s cells when burning fat for energy. These free-radicals break down healthy human tissues in a process called oxidation, the same process that rusts iron or steel. Many aging and health problems occur because of free-radical oxidation. Free-radicals are the black sheep of the atomic family. All fully functioning life, be it bacterial, trees, or human cells, is composed of stable atoms and the oxidation process is clean. When an atom becomes unbalanced, it loses one of its electrons. The other electron reaches out with electromagnetic force and plucks one from the nearest intact molecule. This causes a little “burn,” a hole which then creates another free-radical. Before long there is a chain reaction of free-radical damage. That’s uncontrolled oxidation. Human aging, many cancers, and most degenerations of the brain involve uncontrolled oxidation. The rusting of steel and the browning of a cut apple are also examples of it. The human body does have built-in antioxidants, but today they are put under a tremendous oxidative load from many modern-day problems such as a thinned ozone layer and polluted air.
As we grow older, we begin to show the side effects of our decreasing supply of antioxidants. We experience more aches, pains, lost energy, arthritis, strokes, hardening of the arteries and many other diseases and afflictions. Much of this is not directly due to getting older, but may be because of an unstable oxygen molecule, the free-radical. Our bodies produce antioxidants to neutralize free-radicals, but with age, the levels of antioxidants go down dramatically. It is estimated that by age 40 our antioxidant level is at 50%; by the age 60 to 70, it is down to around 5% to 10%.
Therapy For The Prevention Of Cancer
Researchers from the University of Illinois have found that Antioxidants inhibited the development of lesions and reduced the number of skin tumors in cancer-prone mice up to 90%.
University of California at Davis Researchers found that similarly cancer-prone mice fed a diet that included Antioxidants were free of cancer tumors 40% longer than sibling mice with no Antioxidants in their diets.
To compare the antioxidant values of various foods and nutrients scientists developed a unit of measure called the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbing Capacity). The higher the ORAC rating of a substance the more free-radicals it can neutralize. Some minerals and vitamins act as antioxidants. This does not mean you should take a dose larger than the recommended amount without a doctor’s supervision. There can be serious side effects. The best way to increase your antioxidant levels is to get them from supplements that contain the phytochemicals found naturally in plants.

Heart Disease
One of your most important goals in life is to stay healthy. Because your state of health changes as you get older – you must continuously modify your behavior to enhance your health and delay the onset of preventable diseases.
Heart disease is the number one killer of everyone over forty, and is particularly hard on men. In addition to pain and suffering, all forms of heart disease will be extremely expensive. When you consider the financial pressures on our health care system today, you will want to do all you can to minimize your exposure to major medical problems.
How To Reduce Your Risk
You have to give your body a break from unhealthy stresses. Self-responsibility for a healthy life style is the key. You must take charge of your body and do all you can to reduce the risk of heart disease.
It is common knowledge that the things that cause heart disease are smoking tobacco products, being overweight, being under too much stress and having high blood pressure or a high cholesterol count.
It is also common knowledge that appropriate checkups with an knowledgeable interested physician and the moderate consumption of wine are among the ways you can reduce your risk factors for heart disease.
World Health Organization data indicates that Antioxidants in wine may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 40 percent when used properly.
For years medical researchers were puzzled by the French who consumed one of the highest fat diets anywhere and yet had an astonishing 42 percent lower incidence of heart disease than Americans.
Research at major medical centers including Harvard and The University of Wisconsin concluded the French secret was their consumption of red wine. 60 Minutes called the phenomenon “The French Paradox.”
Dr. Morton Groenback in the Copenhagen City Heart Study, evaluated diets of approximately ten thousand individuals for ten years. He discovered that wine prevents heart diseases. Individuals who incorporated wine in their diet did not develop arteriosclerosis as much and lived longer than those who did not drink wine.

Menopause
Most women go through their menopause years suffering with hot flashes, mood swigs and irregular menstrual cycles without receiving medical help. When women suffered from symptoms of menopause, physicians used to prescribe Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Hormone Replacement Therapy is no longer recommended by the medical community because it has been proven to increase the chances of developing some of the health problems it was supposed to prevent.
In the last several years phytoestrogens have been getting a lot of attention. Supplements such as Duplin Vineyard’s Muscadine Grape Seed are now a reasonable choice for women suffering from menopausal symptoms. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring phenolic compounds found in several plants and can significantly reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms for most women.
Osteoporosis
The loss of bone mass eventually occurs in all women once they enter menopause. The impact this has on your life depends on many factors such as the density of your bones before entering menopause, dietary habits and how much you exercise. When osteoporosis is detected in a woman, prescription medicines are used to try to reverse or slow down this condition. In December of 1998 a paper written by J. J. Sanders of the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina, was publishe din the Baillieres Clinic Endocrinology & Metabolism stating that 3 different laboratories have reported phytoestrogens increase the bone mass in the spines of postmnenopausal women. Daidzein is the primary phytoestrogen responsible for increasing bone mass and Muscadine grapes contain over nine times the levels of daidzein as do the much publicized soy foods.
One in ten women will have to deal with breast cancer in their life time. Early detection and advances in treatment have greatly increased the survival rate for this life threatening disease. Duplin Vineyards Muscadine Grape Seed contains the highest levels of resveratrol, a phytoestrogen proven in laboratory testing to be effective in inhibiting breast cancer. Resveratrol has also been proven to help prevent all three phases of many other forms of cancer.
Resveratrol is effective as an anti-cancer agent as well as possible treatment for many other health conditions. Pharmaceutical companies have applied for ten patents to try to artificially produce it.
The concentration of Antioxidants in fruits vary considerably. Mississippi State University was the first to publish research that shows Muscadine grapes and Muscadine products contain higher levels of Antioxidants.

Resist Aging
Chronological age and physiological age are two different things. The human body is genetically designed to live to 120 years (physiological age). However, the average chronological age for women is 76, and 74 for men. There are several groups of people who have members that live to be over 100 years at an extremely higher rate than the rest of the population. Scientists believe that the primary reason these groups have so many more centenarians is due to dietary differences.
The US National Institute of Health has determined that one of the primary causes of deteriorating health as we age is the relentless attack from free-radicals. It has gbeen estimated that each cell in your body is attacked by free-radicals 10,000 times a day. Your body makes special enzymes to seek out and neutralize free-radicals. Unfortunately, the older you get the fewer of these enzymes your body produces. Another way to balle free-radicals is to eat plants high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are used by the body to neutralize free-radicals and thus reduce the amount of damage our body suffers as we age. Brusnwick biomedical laboratories of Wareham, Massachusetts stated in 2003 that Duplin Vineyard’s Muscadine Grape Seeds have the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbing Capacity) of any natural substance they have yet to test.
Protecting Mental Function
Free-radical damage to brain cells play a large role in deteriorating mental functions as we age. They also play a role in conditions such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. The Copenhagen Study found that those individuals who drink red wine on a daily basis had a lower death rate from diseases as well as improved mental function compared to non-wine drinkers.
The study, the largest of its kind, spurred researchers to determine the cause of this “French Phenomenon”. What they discovered is that it is not the alcohol but a group of phenolic compounds that come from the grape that is responsible for the increased longevity. Resveratrol was determined to be one of the primary phenolic compounds in wine. Resveratrol is different from almost all antioxidants because it can cross the blood brain barrier to help protect brain cells. The search was on to find natures best sources of resveratrol and a rare grape native to the U.S. known as the Muscadine was the winner.

Maintaining A Youthful Appearance
There are several reasons we develop wrinkles and sagging skin, leading to the loss of our young looks. Free-radicals damage the collagen in our skin as well as damaging our capillaries causeing a decrease in nutrients that get to the skin. Both lead to the loss of our youthful looks. Antioxidant supplements can help prevent collagen damage and help maintain the integrity of our blood vessels. The loss of collagen elasticity not only causes wrinkles in the skin but also effects the collagen that makes up every organ and tissue in you body.
