- It is thought that the Mothervine is over 400 years old.
- Many believe that the Mothervine was planted by the first English settlers in the new land of Virginia - Sir Walter Raleigh's Explorers in 1584.
- Others believe that the Mothervine was planted by the Native Americans who lived on Roanoke Island before the English explorers arrived.
- Still others posit that the vine developed naturally many years earlier and was later established as a cultivated vine.
- It is thought that the Mothervine is over 400 years old.
- How old is it?
- The Mothervine is a Scuppernong grape which is a sport - mutant - of the Muscadine.
- The Muscadine is a native American grape.
- Unlike the Muscadine which is usually deep purple in color, Scuppernongs are generally golden bronze-green in color.
- The Scuppernong is a native North Carolina grape.
- Although the Scuppernong is now cultivated throughout the southeastern United States, it only grows wild in North Carolina, specifically on Roanoke Island.
- The Mothervine is thought to be the source of all Scuppernongs.
- The Muscadine is a native American grape.
- The Scuppernong was the first commercially cultivated grape in America.
- Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father, the author of The Declaration of Independence, a statesman and 3rd President of the United States, is also considered the “Father of American Viticulture.” His favorite American wine was Scuppernong.
